Health is our greatest treasure. When you think about it, nothing is more important than your health. We may possess enormous amounts of financial resources, items, and possessions, but if we are not healthy in order to appreciate them, if we cannot enjoy life, what is the point of even having them? We should not choose the material things over our health and expect them to substitute for our health; if we put our wellbeing first we will secure the ability to use our bodies and our minds to the fullest, and achieve the greatest happiness possible.
Regardless of your fitness level, there is always room for improvement! There is always some way to improve the way we feel, move and live! It is never too late to start; it is never too late to try!
There are so many people who think being healthy is a very complex thing and have no idea where to start. But even small steps will contribute to a healthy way of life and make us think far more about how we take care of ourselves, what we eat, how we exercise, etc.
Thus, here are 5 easy steps with which you can embark on your way to a healthier life. They are extremely easy and everyone can start incorporating them into their everyday lives. You can start with all of them or do them one after another. In order to build good habits that will pay off later, it is important that you feel at ease and enjoy them.
- DRINK A GLASS OF LUKEWARM WATER AFTER WAKING UP
Water is the primary source of life, and many of us are just ignoring it. When you wake up in the morning, try drinking a glass of lukewarm water. When the water is at room temperature, it is very easy to drink and your body will have an easier time waking up. Drink it in small sips until you have completely woken up. When you are accustomed to that, you can add a second glass of lukewarm water before breakfast.
Don’t let yourself be thirsty – drink water regularly. Always have some water with you, be it in the office, at home, or outside. Another great habit is to drink water 15 minutes before eating, refrain from drinking any during the meal, and drink water at least 30-40 minutes after eating (depending on the type of food you had, this period may vary from 30 minutes to 2 hours). In this way, you will make sure that all the nutrients have been absorbed and you won’t stress your digestive system.

- CHEW YOUR FOOD WELL
This is a habit most of us have lost. Chewing our food well is of utmost importance. By doing so, we prepare our digestive system for the products we are about to send in and we actually protect ourselves from a number of illnesses. Also because of this practice we will absorb many more nutrients, we will not overeat, we will regulate our bodyweight, and lastly we will have healthier gums.
Eat smaller bites and chew them well, let the food become mushy, and swallowing will occur much more easily. Feed yourself with gratitude. By doing this, you will load the food with positive energy and your body will end up reaping more benefit from it. While eating, focus yourself entirely on your food, turn the TV off, and reduce loud music. Try it, you might be surprised at the effects!
- ADD A SALAD BEFORE THE MAIN DISH
This is a habit which is quite easy to take on and will benefit you greatly! The idea behind it is to provide you with “live” food, or food that has not been heated to a significant degree, and fresh food. The body derives the most nutrients from this kind of food. In addition, the salad will fill up a big part of your stomach and you will eat less after that.
Consume a salad for lunch or for dinner. You can eat one for breakfast, too. Our daily menu should consist of at least 60% fresh and live food.
- LET YOUR BODY REST AND RECHARGE
This is a very useful habit! The majority of us eat at different occasions during the day. We are constantly eating something and only letting our body have a rest while we are sleeping (some of us even have late-night snacks). By doing this, we are not allowing our bodies to have a rest or rejuvenate.
Instead of using the night for resting, the body is then busy digesting food. Aren’t we being a bit unfair?
We should strive to give our body around 14 hours in which we do not consume food. Sounds hard, right? Actually, not at all. For example, we could have dinner at 6 pm and breakfast around 10 am. Of course, this time can be reduced to 12 or 13 hours – whatever you think fits your body best. Make it easy for you and your body; always be flexible.
- REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SALT AND NUTS
There are two things that are both healthy, but can also become unhealthy if we consume them in excessive amounts.
In general, 2 grams of salt per day is enough. The bad news is that we eat so much more. With nearly every processed and packaged food comes large amounts of salt (and not the good kind). Try to limit salt intake to 2 grams per day and substitute iodized salt with rock or sea salt. Beware of processed and packed foods; acquaint yourself with what they contain, and you will be surprised how many foods have salt inside, not to mention the high amounts of sugar.
Nuts are an excellent source of healthy fats. If you are aiming to reduce your bodyweight, be careful with nuts and seeds. Eat around 40 grams a day. Nuts are very heavy in calories and we rarely realize how many we have eaten. 100 grams of nuts have around 600 kcal. Surprising? We know.
Another important consideration concerning nuts is soaking; it is advisable to consume soaked nuts.
